S&S Seeds... At the Forefront of Collection and Conditioning of Seeds for Native California Plants Since 1975

With over 30 years experience in the collecting, processing, growing and selling of native seeds to the re-vegetation industry, we at S&S Seeds have specialized knowledge and a unique prospective on what will and will not work. S&S Seeds can carefully consider your analysis, suggesting appropriate choices of plants to produce successful results. Our customers have come to rely on our mixes and recommendations, so the practical aspects of seeding specifications are well known to us. We get a lot of feedback that uniquely qualifies us to give cultural information you can use successfully.

We can support of your goal of successful restoration as a consultant in a number of ways:

  1. The planner can choose items based on known or suspected ecologic forms, picking a source that fits the needs of the project from our large inventory of collection site identified plant seeds. Source Identified Certification done by an independent agency (California Crop Improvement Association) assures agency and planners of the genetic integrity of the selected species.

  2. We can act as sub-contractor with responsibility of performing under your pre-defined Scope of Work, providing project personnel with expertise in native plant species identification, seed collecting, cleaning and testing, proper storage, inventory control and reporting. Upon contract completion, we can provide recommendations for further maintenance needs or subsequent collection efforts.

  3. We can perform any combinations of the following services:
Site Survey
Locate stands of harvestable plants within a defined zone, locate landowners, obtain permits and verify the identification of the species required. This stand assessment helps to ascertain the potential yield, the date to harvest, and the number and size of collection crews

Seed Increasing
Grow important ecotypes to obtain enough seed to complete the demands of the project.

Seed cleaning
Field material of species collected is allowed to "after ripen" and/or dry on tarps. After drying, the material is processed by hand or mechanically depending on lot size. The rough screened seed is then re-conditioned as required for each species utilizing our state of the art seed-conditioning facility in accordance with industry standards. Each lot given a lot number and, after cleaning the lots are weighed and inspected for uniformity.

Testing
The lot is sampled in accordance with the California Seed Law sampling directions and sent to a certified Seed Testing Laboratory for testing. Seed testing and re-testing is done as necessary to establish purity and germination percent for the seed.

Storage
All clean and dry seed is organized in our warehouse storage facility. Special storage requirements can be utilize if needed.

Priming
Appropriate treatments for dormant seeded types are available. When project conditions warrant their use, these treatments can be applied to break both external and internal dormancy.

Reporting
Specific reports as required by the project can be provided.
