Erosion Control Using Pioneer Grasses, Legumes
Prepares Site for Native Revegetation

 Native climax plant populations cannot
serve as vanguard species for revegetation. These climax populations, which
represent plants that will thrive in a stable environment, must be preceded by
pioneer species that stabilize the soil, control erosion and promote
renitrification. The rhizospherethe soil surrounding the root systemsmust
be brought from what could be a sterile state to biologically active. Fungi,
nematodes, earthworms, bacteria and microbes play a part. Conditioning the
rhizosphere while preventing erosion is often best accomplished using annual
pioneer grasses that have the ability to establish in unfriendly soil and start
the biological processes. Afterward, they may be plowed under to preclude the
annual ryegrasses setting seed.
 Albright's Rapid Cover Mix
is a low-cost temporary erosion control cover that stabilizes soil at the
surface. The mix does not reseed well so it will not compete with later
plantings. Its benefit comes from the plant residuals it leaves that continue to
protect the soil while pre-amending the soil with organic matter.
 Rapid Cover Mix contains 45%
each barley and annual ryegrass plus 10% Crimson Clover to build organic
nitrogen soil content.
