Meet the Beetles

© 2008 Wendy Dager

When is a bug not a bug? When it's a superhero, protecting the landscape from invasive species. Imported from Asia, tamarisk leaf beetles are being used to stem the spread of salt cedar, also known as tamarisk, which was once sought after as a garden ornamental and for wind-breaks and other soil stabilization projects. Mature tamarisk trees are now infamous for their infestation of springs, ditches and wetlands, where each plant can suck up more than 200 gallons of water a day. Experts are hopeful that the hungry little beetle can save the planet from this environmental nuisance.
