There’s a Rolling Stones’ song that says, "You can’t always get what you want," and that certainly applies to the business of landscaping.
Ideally, landscape contractors and other industry professionals would be able to successfully coordinate their upcoming projects with the many variables associated with individual job sites, especially seasonal changes.
The problem is, sometimes seed planting must occur during times that aren’t the most optimal for growth.
Fall is the prime time for planting spring wildflowers, but, says S&S Seeds’ Paul Albright, the second best season is spring in order to have summer emergence.
"There are many areas in California that allow for spring planting," said Paul.
He recommends Peterson’s Sparkling Burgundy Gazania, a hardy, long-flowering perennial that offers a color combination of lavender to blush pink.
It’s easy to germinate, prefers full sun and requires infrequent deep watering.
"A good ornamental doesn’t have to be native to California," said Paul. "Part of what defines wildflowers is that they’re easily grown from direct seeding, plus they reseed themselves, and, best of all, if you miss out on the traditional fall planting, you’ve got a second chance in the spring."
